Language immersion (not to be confounded with language submersion*) is a gradual method of teaching a second language. The technique is based on language programs founded in Canada during the 1960s when Anglophone educators adopted an experimental French immersion program in order to initiate students to the traditions and cultures of French-speaking Canadians
.
The successful experiment revolved around the use of the target-language itself as a teaching tool in a class composed of language students of the same level. Numerous out-of-class activities, like meals and recess, were also conducted in the second language. By making the target language more than a subject material, educators were able to fully immerse students in the new language, while initiating them to a new culture.
In our increasingly developing technological world, the internet has played a crucial role in our daily lives. With these advancements came the new language concept called online immersion. The latter creates a virtual immersion setting that simulates the immersion experience mentioned above. With the same purpose in mind, online language immersion focuses on interaction, engagement and exposure through tools, such as VoIP and screen collaboration. The fact that it may be conducted from home has made online immersion a pleaser among those who occasionally find themselves on the run. ______________________________________________________________________
